How it works

Three steps. One small ritual.

Write something worth keeping. Choose when it should be read. Decide who, if anyone, gets to read it.

STEP 01

Create

Write a private note, a letter, a secret, account details, a memory, and choose when it unlocks.

STEP 02

Lock

Set an unlock date or choose an inactivity period (30 days to 5 years). Your content is encrypted and hidden until the condition is met.

STEP 03

Share (optional)

Keep it entirely to yourself, or share it with a trusted group, you choose who, if anyone, gets to open it.

Two unlock modes

Choose when it opens.
Or what makes it open.

Pick a date when you already know the moment. Pick inactivity when you don’t, and want the capsule to open only if you’re no longer around to open it yourself.

Date-based unlock

A specific moment
on the calendar.

00h 59m 04s
UNLOCKS TODAY ·
  • Pick a specific date and time
  • Live countdown, down to seconds in the final 24 hours
Perfect for: birthdays, anniversaries, future-self messages, scheduled reveals.
Inactivity-based unlock

Opens if you
fall silent.

IF NO ACTIVITY FOR · 30 DAYS TO 5 YEARS
30d 90d 6mo 1y 2y 5y
  • Choose any period from 30 days to 5 years
  • Activity is tracked automatically, nothing extra to remember
Perfect for: digital legacy, emergency information for family, "if something happens to me" scenarios.
Sharing & safety

Built for peace of mind.

Whatever you write stays unreadable to everyone, including us, until the moment you chose.

End-to-end encrypted

Only you and your chosen recipients can read the content. Private capsules never reach our escrow at all, and for shared ones the escrowed key is sealed to your recipients' keys, we can't unwrap it, and we never hold your notes or attachments.

Recipient message

Show a personal note while the capsule waits, "You'll understand when the time comes." A small kindness for the wait.

Nothing gets lost

Recipients keep their own sealed copy, so a capsule they were given still opens for them later, no dependency on the group staying in place.

Notification alerts

Recipients get a gentle notification the moment a capsule unlocks, wherever they are, on whichever Apple device is closest.

HOW A SHARED CAPSULE OPENS WITHOUT YOU

The one thing that isn't
on your device.

A capsule you keep to yourself never goes near the escrow. It stays in your own vault. But a shared capsule has to be able to open for someone else, even if your phone is off, replaced, or gone. For those, ZZPass runs a small escrow that holds two things: the capsule's key and its release condition: a date, or a period of inactivity.

Your content never reaches the escrow, and the key it holds is sealed to your recipients' own keys before it's sent. The copy we hold is useless to us: we can't unwrap it, can't read what it protects, and can't release it early. When the moment comes, the key is released and only your recipients can open it.

The unlock

The moment arrives.
The capsule opens.
The message is yours.

A small celebration when a TimeCapsule comes due, for the writer, the reader, or both.

Ideas to start with

What will you
seal away?

A few things people are putting in their first TimeCapsule.

Future self

Write a letter to yourself one year from now. Predictions, hopes, the questions you're sitting with.

Unlocks · 1 year

Family safety

Store important account details that unlock if you're inactive for six months. Your family will know what to do.

If inactive · 6 months

Celebrations

Schedule a birthday or anniversary message for someone special, and forget you ever wrote it.

Unlocks · on the day

Legacy

Leave messages for the people you love, protected until the right time. They'll hear from you when it matters.

If inactive · 1–5 years
Questions & answers

Before you seal it.

Can ZZPass read a sealed capsule?
No. Your content is encrypted on your device before it ever syncs, and we never hold your notes or attachments. A private capsule never involves the escrow at all; for a shared one, the only thing we escrow is a key sealed to your recipients' keys, which is unusable by us.
Where are my capsules stored?
In your ZZPass vault, encrypted on your device and synced through your own iCloud account across your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
How does inactivity unlock work?
You choose a period, anywhere from 30 days to 5 years. Your activity is tracked automatically, so there's nothing extra to remember, and the capsule only opens once that full period has passed without activity.
Do recipients need ZZPass?
Yes, capsules are shared through an encrypted ZZPass group, and recipients automatically keep a sealed local copy so the capsule still opens for them even if the group is later removed.
If everything is on my device, how does a shared capsule open later?
Private capsules open on your own devices, with no escrow involved. Shared ones use a small escrow that holds just the capsule's key, sealed to your recipients' keys, alongside its release condition, so the moment can arrive even if your device doesn't. Your content never reaches it, we can't unwrap the key, and we can't release it early.
Is TimeCapsule free?
Yes. TimeCapsule is included with ZZPass on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and you can create as many capsules as you like. You can also join any number of shared groups on a free account, creating your own groups is where Premium comes in: free accounts can create one. Premium is unlimited.
